Uncrating the 90lb TITAN Engraving Vise™
Brake screw being adjusted. |
Here the brake screw is set at the most free spinning
position.
Do not unscrew it further or remove the
screw. Screw it
in to provide more resistance. There are
approximately
ten turns of
adjustment. Turn it all the way in
and snug it up for the most braking resistance. |
Warning! Please
read this paragraph carefully before beginning to uncrate your vise.
If you have a question about it
contact us before uncrating. In fact, when ordering please
let us know you read this paragraph.
Referring to the above photos. Never lift the vise
if the brake has been removed. Before lifting, look
closely at the brake screw to verify it is in place. There
should not be a reason for it to be removed. The brake of
the vise consists of a plunger and spring. The plunger is
used for safety during lifting. When lifting, the plunger
can catch the bottom of the ball if the two halves begin to separate.
The fit of the two halves make it unlikely they will separate, but for safety, first verify the brake
has not been removed before moving or lifting the vise.
Note: For shipping to help make sure the brake stays in
place, a drop of the lowest strength Loctite® was placed on the
brake screw threads.
To break the Loctite® loose use the hex adjusting wrench on
it and screw it in a few turns (then unscrew it back to the
position shown in above photo for free spinning).
Liability - This
vise is seriously heavy. If it should fall or drop it can break
bones in your foot or whatever body part it hits. Use this vise
at your own risk. Lindsay Engraving, Inc, or Steve Lindsay are not responsible or liable for any property damage or personal harm it
may inflict.
Warranty - As with AirGravers, PalmControls,
our other vises and holders there is a three year parts/labor
minus shipping warranty. Damage to the vise caused by its being dropped is not covered in the warranty. Please DO NOT
attempt to take the two halves of the vise apart! The bearings
are sealed and lubed for a life time (or several life times) of
service. If there is ever a problem contact us first before
attempting repair work yourself.
Cleaning & Care -
The body is stainless but can still dent or scratch. The
jaws, pin plate and acme screw are hardened stainless and will
hold up better to dents and scratches. The acme screw and T-slot
can be cleaned with a cloth. Hold a cloth against the
threads while opening and closing the jaws to clean the threads.
A light grease on the threads and T-slot is fine. Before
shipping they have been lubricated with white lithium grease.
The base is aluminum. If it should tarnish it can be be cleaned with
aluminum polish such is sold for polishing aluminum car rims at auto-parts stores.
To keep the vise dent and scratch free, be careful not to drop
wrenches or parts on it. If using chemical acids on an
item being engraved (i.e. ferric chloride, Birchwood Casey® gun
blue or Super Blue™) be very careful with it. If acid spills
down on the acme screw and t-slot take the jaws and acme screw
apart right away and clean the acid off the
parts before it pits and rusts everything in place.
(Don't try to take the two ball halves apart though!) The
vise is stainless but not against acid! If you do spill
acid on it please email right away with
your phone number and Steve can help with ideas to clean up and
neutralize the acid.
Instructions - Uncrating the TITAN Engraving Vise
After placing the base on your bench, pick up the vise
using the handle and carry it
to your bench
and set in the base. |
Vise in place on sturdy work bench |
Remove the bolts and lifting plate. Keep the lifting plate
and use it any time you would like to lift the vise.
Please do not try and pick up the ball without the lifting
plate. It is hard to get a hold of and it can
pinch your finger when setting it back in the base. |
With the jaw screws removed, the pin-plates can be
removed by picking them straight up. |
Here the pin-plates are being reinstalled.
The hex socket
headed bolts do not need to be
overly tightened.
To keep the vise dent and scratch free, be careful not
to drop wrenches or parts on it. |
Here one jaw has its two bolts left out that permits it
to pivot float. This is useful if you are holding an
object
without parallel sides. |
|
Since the jaws are threaded, various fixtures can be made and
bolted down.
The wood jaws shown above were made
for the 6" Goliath Vise and
Turntable vise
but they also fit
the smaller of the two bolt patterns on the Titan Vise.
These wood jaws look small on the Titan but will still work
depending on what
you are holding. They are shown as example ideas for making your own
larger ones. You may contact us if you have a special request.
The Vise Holding Accessory kit
will also fit the Titan with the smaller of the
two bolt patterns at the top of the jaws. |
The internal brake has
10 turns of resistance adjustment.
Screw in (clockwise) to increase the drag and decrease free
spinning. |
